Picking Up Good Habits

Don't you just love it when your kids picks up one of your good habits for a change? I do. As you might have figured out from my previous posts that I have been trying to make my diet, which I thought was already pretty healthy, even healthier. We've been experimenting in the kitchen with new recipe ideas and even trying a few new vegetables. It's been great and lucky me I've even lost a little bit of weight. What I wasn't trying to do is convince Quirky that she needed to do this to, so I was a little surprised the other day when I noticed her making herself an early lunch. She had pulled out my giant tub of spinach, which made me stop to see where this was going. She ended up making what she called a Turkey, Spinach, and Cheese Tortilla Pizza. Now Quirky will eat spinach, if I put it on her plate, but normally voluntarily. I was a little surprised and proud. She really is a great kid.

Field-trip...Bird Sanctuary

One of the most important parts of education, in my humble opinion, is actually seeing and experiencing the world around you. Yes you can talk about birds, read about birds, look at websites about birds and yes you can even find videos about birds if you look hard enough. And yes, a person can learn a lot from all of those things, but nothing can comparing to watching someone fascinated at seeing all of these magnificent birds close up. Quirky and I were very lucky this year and were able to go on a fieldtrip with friends of ours to a Bird Sanctuary. They were kind enough to ask us to tag along on a fieldtrip they had already planned. I am so glad that they did.

Basket Weaving...and a Thank You

Quirky's Basket
Back in February Quirky was lucky enough to attend a one day basket weaving course offered by our local library and taught by  her former art teacher. I've been meaning to post about for awhile but kept forgetting. The class itself was a mixture of teens and adults with Quirky being the youngest one there.

What you see here is cheapness...

Uh... I mean thriftiness and common sense. What you see here is what will end up being at least six pairs of shorts and what ever else I can scrounge out of the scraps left over. What you see here is $18 and some change worths of clothes from Goodwill. I literally counted out change to buy this stuff...poor cashier. Oh well. Why the big shopping spree?

"I want to Dance...

... all night to the best song ever...blah blah blah", over and over in my head the words keep playing my head. Sometimes they are mixed up in some weird combo with "you don't know your beautiful". Why may you ask does this crazy woman have parts of One Direction songs stuck in her head? Mainly because Dork and I just spent several hours

Valentine's Day is only one day...

Normally Dork and I don't make a really big deal out of Valentine's Day. We figure there are 365 days for us to show each other how much we care, and countless ways. From the little things that he does without fail,

Tis the Season for Holiday Traditions

Tonight Quirky and I will be headed to see a local production of the Nutcracker. It is done through a local ballet and while the dancers may not be famous or as graceful as more experienced dancers they are perfectly imperfect. Just like us. A Quirky girl and her slightly neurotic mom. Yeah...I can admit it. I've got just a tad of panickycrazymomitis. A great portion of my life I have let fear lead my decisions...

Yesterday

There are days when I wonder why I chose to go back to homeschooling. Beating my head against the wall thinking...OK how can I explain this another way? Is there another way? Start to panic and then have day dream nightmares about how I am screwing her up for life. Yes...I have this thoughts in my head. It's like a multi-screen cinema with various scenarios constantly running...AT THE SAME TIME! It could drive me crazy or to give up but, then there are days like yesterday...

Family Movie Night

Family movie night is a standing date in our house...most often on Friday nights but sometimes it is postponed to Saturday. Last night however found Quirky and myself home alone...Dork had to work :(  . On the upside to Dork being gone was that Quirky and I had movie night our style...

Sometimes Quirky surprises us...

Saturday we went to the first birthday party of a simply adorable little girl . A little girl who has Quirky enthralled. To be honest at first I was hesitant to go the party...they are usually hard for Quirky to handle. My fear was that Quirky might not be able to handle all the new people she would meet...all the noise...did I mention the party was in a bouncy center? A place that is normally full of over excited kids...loud games...oh the list goes on and on.  (let's be honest here...I was scared Quirky was going to freak out and ruin the party) Ultimately Dork and I decided to go.  I am glad that we did...because Quirky surprised us both.

Disabilities?

Quirky asked me something last night at dinner...something that made me feel a little sad. Sad that she would ever think to ask this question. Her question?
"Mom Do I have disabilities?" My heart skipped a beat...but my answer I already knew. It was in my heart...in my head and on the tip of my tongue. No...a definite no. But I did not just say no. I couldn't just say no...she deserved a better answer. What did I say?

Our local bookstore...

Its Quirky's and my favorite place to go. Dork says we go there too much...but how can we not go? For us its much more than a bookstore...

Girl Time...

Sometimes I am just really thankful that Quirky is a girl. I know...boys are great too...but I was blessed with a girl. I wouldn't trade her for a dozen boys. Why? Because having a girl means doing girlie things together like...

A Beautiful Handmade Mother's Day Card

Friday Quirky brought home a lovely handmade Mother's Day card. A card not just from her but also from our dog ...because I am his mother too. On it she wrote some acrostic poems.
